New Education Facility Opens in Portland, Oregon

Faubion School + Concordia University, a 3 to PhD® community, will serve children, prepare educators, provide wrap-around services

PORTLAND, Ore. – August 30, 2017 – A community-wide celebration marked the opening of Faubion School + Concordia University, a 3 to PhD community.  The new education model and facility in NE Portland prepares the next generation of educators inside a public pre-K-8 school, taking into account the needs of the whole child – from prenatal care through “pursuing one’s highest dreams.”

The facility is the first completely new ground-up construction of a Portland public school in 20 years, thanks to a bond passed by Portland voters in 2012. The Portland Public Schools bond provided $38.3M, while Concordia University Portland and its supporters contributed an additional $15.5M plus land.

More than 1,200 community members were joined by Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, Oregon Chief Education Officer Lindsey Capps, Oregon State Senator Lew Frederick, and Multnomah County Chair Deborah Kafoury, the next PPS Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero, PPS Board Chair Julia Brim-Edwards and Concordia University President Charles Schlimpert.  Emcee for the event was Kim Scott, president and CEO of Trillium Family Services and special guest Renée Watson attended and spoke.

“3 to PhD expresses both the value of education and the value of community,” said Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler. “I applaud you, the community, and the founders, for bringing this incredible vision to life.”

“This innovative partnership embodies our vision for education in the state of Oregon,” said Lindsey Capps, Oregon’s Chief Education Officer. “Truly today is a time to lift every heart and sing.”

Special guest speaker Renée Watson shared that “We are gathered here today to celebrate this safe space for all our young, our dreamers. You are our promise, our dream come true.”

“Voters in Portland continue to reaffirm their support of public education,” said PPS Chair Julia Brim-Edwards. “With the launch of this innovative partnership between PPS and Concordia, public education is taking a leap forward. And of course, the main benefits are students.”

Together with the community, six core providers came together to form 3 to PhD with a vision of creating safer, healthier, more educated communities – a model that is poised for replication across the nation. 3 to PhD founders and core providers include Concordia University Portland, Portland Public Schools, Faubion School, Trillium Family Services, Kaiser Permanente and basics (formerly Pacific Foods).

“After nearly eight years of extraordinary collaboration with the community, with Faubion School, Portland Public Schools, Kaiser Permanente, Trillium Family Services, and now, basics (formerly Pacific Foods) – the 3 to PhD dream has become a reality,” said Gary Withers, Concordia University’s chief strategic relations officer. “We are united in our vision to create safer, healthier, more educated communities.”

The new building also includes an early childhood education center for up to 120 children, a 2,500 sq. ft. Kaiser Permanente 3 to PhD Wellness center serving Faubion students and Concordia students; mental and behavioral health by Trillium Family Services; and a food club with healthy, organic foods by basics; in addition to the full preK-8 Faubion School and Concordia University classrooms, conference rooms, and faculty office spaces.

“3 to PhD takes prevention to an unprecedented level by wrapping services — medical, dental, social, and behavioral — around children and their families to address more holistically the factors that influence their health and well-being,” said Imelda Dacones, MD, CEO and president of Northwest Permanente, the medical group that serves Kaiser Permanente members.
