Refrigerator
The refrigerator keeps foods cool, and is an important part of your kitchen. It works by transferring heat from something warmer to something cooler, using a substance called refrigerant. Refrigerant is made up of special molecules that can change state from a gas to a liquid, and back again.
In the refrigerator, the molecules in the refrigerant start out as a vapor (kind of like a mist). Then they go through a compressor where the vapor gets squeezed together and turned into a hot, high-pressure gas. This gas moves up into the back of the refrigerator through a small pipe. The refrigerant then goes into a condenser where the heat is removed and it turns back into a liquid. It then goes through an expansion valve, where its pressure is suddenly lowered. This makes some of the liquid turn very quickly into a vapor, changing its state again to a gas.
