Bourke Street Bakery
A cult favorite in Sydney, Bourke Street Bakery is famous for their mouth-watering sausage rolls and sweetcakes. Their sourdough bread and cakes are made by hand with a strong dedication to good produce, strong flavors, and artisanal baking techniques. They have 13 locations across the city and serve devoted customers in Alexandria, Banksmeadow, Balmain, Barangaroo, Marrickville, Neutral Bay, and Potts Point.
Now this iconic Australian cafe has set up shop in New York City. This new location, which is run by Paul Allam and his wife, features the classics like lemon curd tarts and a Nutella muffin. They also serve up savory treats like lamb almond harissa and shakshuka danishes. The restaurant has quickly garnered a devoted following, earning a spot on Eater’s list of 15 essential New York bakeries.
Brickfields
Brickfields bakery-cum-cafe channels the laid-back vibe of suburbia. Shelves are packed with pickles and tins, big sacks of flour and grain stacked under the benches and deco-style glass lightshades hang from the ceiling. There are a few big tables outside and a public courtyard to sit in, but most people eat on the go.
The cafe has a constantly evolving sandwich menu backed by well made coffee. But it’s the baked goods that are the main draw – and they’re deservedly popular.
Small sundry shops, convenience store chains and a Sam’s Grocery at Nu Sentral mall that are linked to KL Sentral ensure you can stock up on essentials at a moment’s notice. The area also has clinics, mobile connectivity providers, blind massage centres and coin-operated laundromats.
Poernomo
Reynold Poernomo, also known as “the dessert guy”, is an Australian household name. The MasterChef back-to-win contestant has been a hit on the show, earning him a reputation for high-concept and technically masterful desserts. Poernomo runs KOI Dessert Bar in Sydney with his two brothers, Arnold and Ronald.
He recently partnered with famed Italian liqueur Disaronno for Father’s Day 2020, creating a five-course menu of desserts and cocktails. The menu featured desserts like an intricate Golden Snitch and a collapsible rabbit hole, both of which require advanced technique.
Born in Indonesia, Poernomo immigrated to Australia with his family when he was six. He has since made a name for himself in the hospitality industry, most recently competing on MasterChef Australia. His Quidditch-inspired creation scored him the final immunity pin, but lost out in the grand final to Emelia Jackson and Martin Benn’s better replica of a toffee apple.
Black Star Pastry
Black Star Pastry – the boutique Sydney bakery with a cult following for what the New York Times calls “the world’s most Instagrammable cake” – has opened its first Shanghai store. Located in the swanky EQ Moore Park, the space features a light and airy cafe out front and production kitchens behind.
The shopfront resembles the turning page of a book, nodding to Black Star’s original CBD home in the Kinokuniya bookstore. Inside, a minimalist design reflects the brand’s story and culture.
Alongside St Ali coffee, the store carries Black Star’s full range of sweet treats. Its most famous incarnation is the Strawberry Watermelon Cake, featuring layers of airy almond dacquoise and rose-scented cream topped with halved strawberries, Iranian rose petals, and slivered pistachios.
Saga
You’ve likely eaten a Brickfields croissant or pastry without realising it, because they distribute their creations to cafes across Sydney. This one-of-a-kind bakery is known for their sourdough breads, but they also serve up a collection of spectacular cakes, including their cinnamon-scented carrot cake and flourless chocolate.
If you want to replicate those elaborate flower-topped cakes you see all over Instagram, this is the place to do it. Call ahead to order a bespoke cake by head chef Andy Bowdy.
Inspired by the owner’s Sri Lankan heritage, this family-run bakery offers a range of exotic cakes. Our pick is the signature cake, which smothers moist butter cake with citrus cream for a simple flavour that’s anything but basic. The chocolate kaya cake is another crowd-pleaser.
